Christmas 2021

Where does the time fly? I last blogged in July 2021 after an 8 year hiatus and hoped to have more pictures and descriptions of what is happening.

Locomotive wise, The RTR had a complete failure with a Proto2000 GP38-2. It was a CSX for those that are interested. I'm told by a truly reliable source that this particular model had "Zincpests". For those of you that is new, it is the Zinc in the frame had too much Lead content and through age became VERY Brittle!. Now, of course I'm searching for another frame or maybe I'll have to break out the Milling Machine.

On a personal note, the wife and I have moved, downsized, though not all our stuff has been gone through, we are making headway!

8 Years since the last entry and it will be another 6 months until Kathy and I are in the new house and I'll able to play train.

I packed up all my train stuff, excluding paint, I'll transport that separate. We are working to build a garage, barn and train room. Then I'll be able to paint and fiddle all I want.

Didn't get a chance to run trains. Did mostly wiring. The 2 year old helped grandpa with testing and the 6 year old played in his dirt pile (it was cold though, he came back in)

Feb 1: I'm headed to the layout on Saturday. Lots of wiring, I'm sure. Guess I'll know if the new glasses are right. I have two loco's with me a Kato Dash 8 and an Athearn GP50 (maybe a 60), older model. We'll see how they work.

January 31, 2013

I've made a thousand New Years resolutions and one of them is to get this blog going. Do the locomotive maintenance and document it. We'll see how long that lasts.

Ideas for cameras would be greatly appreciated.

News January 31st 2012

I'll do better at keeping this up. I have in my project box:

SD75M with new non-warped trucks
SW1500 that is torn up from the floor up
Dash 9 in canary yellow that will become a NS loco
A GP38-2 and GP40-2 shell that will become the Richmond Termianl color scheme

I just repaired (no pictures!) a friends Proto 1000 BL2. Cracked axles.

all for now.

Update number 2 to the GP38-2 project

Here are some pictures of my first attempt at going to LED's vice the standard lamps. Seems to work okay. I've already learned a lot. I knew how to solder, I should have realized I needed to practice that!

sadly, I've been sick and haven't been able to help Rick with the layout. But I'm not sitting still. I should finish up the first CSX GP38-2 tonight and strip the second one down tomorrow.

I used 5/32 brass tubing, cut with a pipe cutter (I need a sharper one) about 1/2 or a little longer. Fit's right in. I RTV'd the rear one and had to pinch (squish) the front one to make it fit between the number board glass. Wired it up, Blue to F7, yellow to F2 and white to F6. It works with the 0 key on the controller. It doesn't seem to match direction of the unit though.

Comments always appreciated. (I'm working through the camera and taking really close up pictures)
